Paradoxical
Vocal Fold Motion (PVFM) is an abnormal motion of the vocal folds.
The
vocal folds move toward each other during quiet breathing when they should remain
completely abducted (open). The movement results in irritation and cough.
PVFM is often misdiagnosed as asthma. Asthma medications fail to resolve
the cough and often make it worse.
Proper treatment is with a program
of respiratory retraining to reduce the abnormal movements of the vocal folds
when breathing.
